Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of October 17, 2001
2:00 - 3:30 pm, Davis Conference Room

Present: Chris Gray, Linda Hastings, Esther Millar (Recorder), Marina Wan (Facilitator), Charles Woods
Regrets: Bill Oldfield

  1. Approval of minutes from the meeting on October 3, 2001
    Accepted as distributed.

  2. Business Arising:
    4. Linkbot Report - Esther ran another report on October 11 to see if any progress is being made. The statistics show very little change, so Esther will continue to personally encourage staff to fix their broken links.

    5. Issues on Archiving - Marina has now submitted our report to Mark.

  3. Agenda Review
We will ask Bill to present a report on Access 2001 at a future meeting.
The item on robots.txt is deferred to a meeting when Bill can be present.

  4. Top Page Design and CNAPG
Linda has prepared a prototype for CNAPG's meeting on Monday October 22. It can be found on a development page she has created for the project: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/LibWebUse/
    prototps.html
The prototype follows the new format established by UWinfo; the content and categories are based on a prototype created for CNAPG by Paul St. Pierre.

Marina will be attending the CNAPG meeting as well.

  5. Staff Web Review Draft Report (http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/swreview/
    report.html)
The group reviewed and accepted the draft report prepared by the Staff Web Review Group. The following questions or suggestions were raised:
    1. Is it acceptable to link to restricted resources from the top level of the Staff Web? We agreed that this would be acceptable since the site is primarily for use by UW Library staff. But we also agreed that a statement should appear on the top level explaining that some areas of the site are restricted to UW Library staff.
    2. Will the format (and template) for second and third level pages be easy to use by maintainers with various levels of HTML and Dreamweaver expertise? The Group responded that the format was designed specifically with this in mind. All levels of users should be able to work within the suggested format.
    3. It was recommended that Bill and Marina run a test to ensure that indexing within a structure that contains multiple private directories (access by a common password) will function as required.

Marina will be presenting the report to DLCC tomorrow, October 18.

  6. Statistics on the Use of the Library Web Site
We agreed that the issues surrounding web statistics needs to be discussed within a larger context than Web Ops. There are issues and decisions that go beyond the technical aspects of collecting statistics. Chris will prepare a memo for Mark Haslett outlining what we have done thus far and how we see this progressing.

In the meantime Charles has recommended a program that can analyse a large log quickly. He will download a demo copy of the program so he can fulfill the current requests he receives for web statistics. We see this only as an interim measure until a permanent solution can be found.

Linda also suggested a web site that provides this service: http://websitegarage.netscape.com/turbocharge/
    hitometer/index.html

  7. IST Courses
For our information, Marina noted that IST is presenting a course on creating drop-down menus. Prerequisites are Advanced Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Marina and Esther will be attending the course on October 25.

  8. Next Meeting
    Wednesday, October 31 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.; Porter 428
