Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of January 23, 2002
1:30 - 3:00 pm, Davis Conference Room

Present: Linda Hastings, Esther Millar, Chris Gray (Recorder), Marina Wan (Facilitator), Charles Woods

Regrets: Bill Oldfield

  1. Unspamable E-mail
Chris will experiment with modifying the JavaScript to turn it into a function that can be more easily included in pages by staff. As a test he will try it on the library email aliases page.

  2. Approval of minutes from the meeting on January 9, 2001
    Approved with minor corrections.

  3. Business Arising:
    2. UW Library Web Retention Policy - Esther will put the a page on retention policy on the WebOps site.

Charles will draft a memo to go out to webmaint-l on procedures for recovering lost files.

  4. Agenda Review
    No changes to the agenda.

  5. Web Statistics
Charles is still working on the stats requested by Mary Stanley and on separating the the public terminal proxy log information from the logs for the web site. He now has a copy of FastStats for trial.

Chris will send to Marina the information he compiled from the questionaire that went out to LibAdminPlus and webmaint-l.

  6. Campus Web Development
Marina reported on the IST professional development seminar on UW Web Standards and Guidelines. Of interest was the Arts Computing site that supplements their JavaScript drop-down menus with a separate page for each menu so that links for mouseovers are also clickable.

Linda will check bookstore for some of the books recommended.

Linda will call Jesse Rogers about obtaining the special font recommended for use on web pages.

  7. New Library Home Page and Preparation for Implementation
    • Navbar - Uncertain where Bill is with testing how new navbar will work with TUG web pages
    • Accessibility Guidlines - Esther will add links on the WebOps guidelines page to UW and government (http://nnlm.gov/pnr/news/200201/disabled.html  ) guidlines for web page accessibility. Since this is a potentially overwhelming amount of information, specific mention will be made of readability and color choice that is an issue on some UW Library pages.
    • Scheduling and Work Flow - It was agreed to have a site freeze and to convert the complete site rather than to phase in changes. A likely target date is mid-April.

Esther put together a list of steps based on last redesign project. The group will look over this list for review at the next meeting.

Rose and Cherryl may be able to assist with the work of conversion. Help is limited by who has permission to access the top pages of the site.

Ester will run Linkbot early in February after the link-in of the staff pages to begin site cleanup in preparation for the site upgrade.

      Marina access to eJournals ????
