- About the New Library Web
1. Update on the Project
Some very interesting suggestions have been received from the class relating to navigation.
CNAG has completed testing of the prototype and the next step is finalize the look of the prototype. The new Library web page will not be up by May 2002
2. Dealing With Orphan Files
There are approximately 8,000 files in this category. Many are known situations but even after these are accounted for there are still 83 pages of orphans left.
Esther will send a memo out and emails to individuals listing their orphan files.
Esther has had some problems with her Linkbot installation and may need a re-install. Charles will look into this.
3. Dealing with Old Committee Files
A possible move of old archived files to a private staff directory, not indexed. Then these files will ot have to be maintained. Anne Fullerton would like the FastTrack groups stuff move to an archive like this.
Marina will issue a memo to previous IRC members about their minutes, etc. They are preserved on the CDs if anyone wishes to research the early days of the web at the UW Library. The plan mentioned to these people will be the move of the files to the private archive directory.
Esther will add this information to her memo and set up the private directory before sending it out.
- UW Web Standard Guidelines
There was discussion about placing "<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">" at the top of all documents. Unless the document conforms to HTML 4.01 transitional it is not valid to add this line. WebOps cannot ensure that this standard is being met at all times. Every page would have to be examined and tested.
This may be achievable in the future but user would need to validate their pages with the W3C validator. Dreamweaver, although it does not strictly follow the standard can be used as a validator. A Dreamweaver refresher course may be required. This string can be set-up as the default in Dreamweaver but the only way to ensure compliance is to test pages with the W3C validator.
- The solex font in the gold standard is a problem (no site license) so it is no longer mandated and "cheltonham" can be used in its place.
- The proposed change of button on the far right will not be implemented in UWELib.
- Although though they recommend a maximum of 7 categories the Staff Web has 8.
- Text is being proposed in the menus to deal with some problems but it creates it own. The Library will stay with images.
- A transparent gift to surround the menus is proposed but the coding is too complicated. The Library will live with the problem of the "hand" showing.
- The group is setting up a mailing list and Marina will arrange to have the WebOps groups added.
- TUGWeb Development
The new Webpage is now live. It is intended to be a low maintenance jump off point. The new blue navbar should now replace the old green one.
To implement the new navbar the server-side include statements on lap2 will have to be modified. The Ejournals program will also have to be modified to show this change.
Since the local Journal Indexes page only uses the navbar on the first page the server-side includes will implement this change. The results pages show a simple TUG logo and will be left unchanged.
Linda Hastings will make these changes but there are some problems with permissions that will have to be addressed. A memo will be prepared by Mark and sent to the WebOps group.
- ColdFusion Update
Jim Parrott is working on the subjects for his Scholarly Societies project. Some preliminary work is being performed in making the migration to ColdFusion from Zope. The database will have to be adjusted with Jim's updated subject when they are available.
A suggestion for a demo of the ColdFusion system for WebOps was suggested and Chris will set up at time in the Flex Lab. Jim Parrott and Gail Sperling will be invited.
- Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held Wednesday April 17th
1:30 - 3:00 pm
