- Dreamweaver MX
Esther, Linda, and Bill attended the IST Course "What's New in Dreamweaver MX and Fireworks MX." At the course they learned the following:
- One can now create and maintain dropdown menus using only Dreamweaver MX. Special images still need to be created in Fireworks, e.g., the top images for "forms," "borrowing," etc.
- The MX versions of both programs now provide more control over the appearance and set-up of the drop-down menus.
- Drop-down menus created in Fireworks 4 cannot be exported to and edited in Dreamweaver MX. New menus would have to be created.
- When Dreamweaver MX is installed, it does not remember what sites were defined in Dreamweaver 4; sites need to be redefined in Dreamweaver MX.
Both Esther and Linda have experienced problems with elements repeating themselves in error while working on the new pagesEsther in Fireworks 4 and Linda in Dreamweaver MX. Linda had noted earlier that she would contact Carol Vogt or the Macramedia Online Forums regarding the problem.
Based on the benefits of moving to Dreamweaver MX, the group decided this would be the best way to handle dropdown menus on the Library Web.
Chris will arrange for Esther and Marina to have Dreamweaver MX and Fireworks MX installed on their systems as soon as possible.
- Text Menu on Navigation Bars
Esther completed sample pages with colour and font variations, as well creating a second level server-side include statement using Fireworks 4 and Dreamweaver 4.
Based on what Esther and Linda learned at the IST course above, Linda (who already had Dreamweaver MX on her system) created a new home page utilising drop-down menus built with Dreamweaver MX. She is currently working on the navigation bar for the second level server-side include statement.
- Training in Homepage Maintenance
When the new home page and server-side include statements are operational and mounted, we will begin training additional back up personnel. Rose Koebel and Marian Davies will receive upgrades and be trained first.
- TUGweb Navigation Bar and Maintenance Issues
Marina referred to Mark's memo of April 17 where TUG Executive approval was given to Mark's recommendations for ensuring a clean transition to the new TUG home page. We recommend that Linda use text-based dropdown menus created in Dreamweaver MX for the home page and lower level navigation server-side includement statement. Cheryl Kieswetter maintains the TUGweb pages. Esther will speak to Cheryl about her maintenance role regarding the dropdown menus; and Marina will speak to Mark about TUGweb.
- Accessibility Issues
Re: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/webmaint/
accessibility.html
Marina added two sites that deal with the use of colour and text when designing for people with partial sight and color deficiencies.
- Flash
Marina introduced the possibility of supporting Macromedia Flash in the Library. The History Project (LT3 project) currently uses Flash and she and Jane Forgay (Liaison librarian for History) are wondering how the Library will be able to support the site after it is completed and responsibility is transferred to the Library.
After some discussion we acknowledged that Flash may have benefits, but at this point, there is no current requirement for the program. If the History project doesn't get completed, too many resources will have been expended to support something that is not yet required. Marina will send out the URL for the History Project.
Shabiran's Psychology 291 project is still incomplete. Marina will inform Shabiran about LT3's T5 program as an alternative for developing her Psychology 291 project.
- Web Survey
Charles informed the group about a discussion he had with Erin Murphy regarding survey software that could allow an end-user to design a survey and provide database tools to analyze the returns at any time -- without the need of Systems intervention and high-end database setup and analysis. Jack Cooper (IST) is investigating such a tool called Dragon Web Survey (http://www.wmotion.com/dragon.html).
Chris suggested that a ColdFusion solution may also exist. He will check the Macromedia Developer Exchange.
- HTTPS Access from Public Workstations
In the new public workstations setup, the browsers will support secure HTTP.
- Around the Table
Bill noted that the new OCUL Search feature will be going live shortly. He recommended that we should then make this our sole access to staff information (i.e., discontinue the staff list in the Staff Web). Bill will ask Charles to set up an alias for the OCUL Search when a URL has been selected. When the new site goes live, Bill will leave a forwarding page in the old OpenText area.
Esther noted that she has removed the Web Conversion Plan files from the WebOps web area, and has moved the required files into the Archives area for future reference.
