Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of November 13, 2002
Dana Porter Conference Room, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Present: Esther Millar, Marina Wan (Facilitator), Charles Woods, Bill Oldfield, Chris Gray (Recorder)

Regrets: Linda Hastings

  1. Minutes of meeting, October 30, 2002

The minutes were accepted with one small clarification in #4.

  2. Business Arising
    • #4 Esther sought clarification of the use of dropdown menus in the left navigation bar. The uwinfo "gold standard" does not allow use of dropdown menu at the side of the page. This is used for navigation of the main architectural features of a campus site and should be based on classes of users while the top navigation bar is for convenient quick access to pages on- and off-site.
    • #7 Marina has requested Flash for three people.
    • #2-#6 Bill has sent in a submission to OLITA.

  3. Agenda Review

    No changes.

  4. Campus Web Standards and Guidelines, and Library Websites

The library is not following the campus Web standards by following a site architecture based on classes of users. Second level pages need better site navigation. There was discussion of how the user class based architecture and left navigation bar would apply to library pages. Esther and Marina will work on an example of how the library site might more closely follow the campus standard which maintainers of upper level pages will be encouraged to follow.

  5. Cascading Style Sheets

Chris presented a demo of the basic mechanisms and principles of CSS.

  6. Dreamweaver MX

Esther reported that her testing of sharing files between Dreamweaver 4 and MX went smoothly. Chris will ask Carl to have DWMX installed for Cheryl, Rose, and Marion. These support staff have been trained and Esther will support adaptation of dropdown menus to DWMX.

Before supplying DWMX to all Web maintainers, Marina will send a message to webmaint-l to determine which staff still need Dreamweaver to assess the need for upgrades to DWMX and for IST training.

  7. WebOps' Terms of Reference

    Latest draft: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/webops/
    terms3.html.

The WebOps terms of references as revised by Mark and Susan were discussed and everyone was happy with the adjustments.

  8. Link to TRELLIS - Full Search on the Library home page

    An idea:
    http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/index_mw.html, designer's touch needed.

The unreliability of the Quick Search to TRELLIS has prompted the addition of a direct link to full searching capabilities. The suggestion was made to add below the Quick Search box a link similar to that on the top but to the full search capabilities of TRELLIS. An example can be viewed (may still need a designers touch) at http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/index_mw.html.

The suggestion will be forwarded to Mark and Susan and if accepted an email will go out when the change is made explaining the rationale.

  9. Around the Table

Esther has cleaned up the TUG Web so that SSIs are used and run LinkBot to locate other problems. Cleanup is still underway.

LinkBot will be run against the Library web pages next week.
