December 11, 2002 - approved without change.
- Business Arising
November 13, 2002
- #2 Business Arising -the library's submission for the OLITA innovation award was unsuccessful. It was mentioned that the response suggested a possible article for the OLA Access magazine. Bill will look into it.
December 11, 2002
- #4 - TRELLIS Upgrade - Charles Woods thanked those responsible for the provision of a temporary homepage when the TRELLIS system was down. The upgrade went well.
- #9 - Project with ISR discipline pages - Helen He, a co-op student has been hired. It was mentioned that if possible style sheets should be incorporate in any templates created.
- #5 -Links on home page to Online Reference and Connect from Home - the news area on the homepage is getting crowded and it was suggested that the proxy link be moved to the next column. Linda Hastings will look after this.
- Agenda Review
No changes were made.
- Online Continuing Education Courses
The University in partnership with Education To Go® is now offering a number of online courses. They are done entirely on the world-wide web. Each course runs for a maximum of 8 weeks, with 2 lessons released each week (on Wednesdays and Fridays) for 6 weeks and a 2-week period in which you log in one last time and do a final exam. There is a charge for each course.
Some courses may be relevant to WebOps members.
This information has been distributed widely and there was some discussion about possible inappropriate web maintenance courses that a staff member may request. If a manager is unsure about the applicability of a web maintenance course he or she should contact the WebOps group before approving funding and staff time. Bill and Charles will raise this issue at the the next System's managers meeting.
- UWdir authentication
IST is switching over to an active directory UWDir authentication system. The existing system is used for authentication of the Hotmail and Yahoo web mail services from our public workstations. The switch to the new system, which will be required, will break all our existing .htaccess authentication processes.
Bill will make the server configuration changes as well as changing all the existing .htaccess files. There are currently 21 .htaccess file active on the Library's web site. The switchover is targeted for completion within the month.
All web mail services currently shut down in the Library's proxy server will be opened up and require UWDir authentication.
- Dreamweaver - user survey; decisions on upgrades
The results of our Dreamweaver user survey were examined. It was interesting to note that only one out of five who do not use Dreamweaver were willing to give up their copies.
Since Dreamweaver 4 and MX can work together there is no immediate demand that most of our users upgrade to MX. MX is essential only for those who contribute to the maintenance of the drop down menus and really useful to those who do a lot of web maintenance activity. As a result people can stay with Dreamweaver 4 without any problem so no mass upgrade project will be initiated.
- Floor Plans on the Web (Guelph - Where is it? )
Linda Hastings will prepare a demonstration of the use of Flash for floor plans. Since even the existing floor plans are proving useful at the information desk an improved floor plan web delivery method with more information would be valuable. There was some discussion about setting up a database for a call number location service for the demo but based upon current priorities Linda will dummy up the display. Paul will also collect some learning objects that use Flash for the demonstration.
- WebOps' priorities list
Deferred.
- Round Table
Everyone was reminded of the change in starting time of WebOps meetings. WebOps meetings will continue to start at 1:00 PM until Chris' Portal Project participation finishes.
