Minutes of the Meeting of March 19, 2003
1:00 p.m., Davis Centre Conference Room

  1. Minutes of meeting March 5, 2003
    • #6 The paragraph beginning "The group commended the work of Rose Koebel and Marian Davies.. all web pages in both the staff and public areas". Should read "..all web pages in the staff area".

  2. Business Arising
    • #4 Linda was asked to change the words 'More Search Options' to lower case.
    • #8 Esther noted that several drop downs need the FAQ list added, these include: Google, OCUL, Ejournals, and TUG.

  3. Agenda Review
    • Add Compliance Issues as #11 on agenda.

  4. Dreamweaver sftp (Marina, Chris)
    • TRELLIS and LAP2 will allow only Secure FTP. We have no choice but to test it. Charles will use Telnet secure for all machines. We will need to discuss procedures and identify who will be using it.

  5. "Ask a Librarian" link to LibWeb home page (Marina, Paul)
    • Paul reported that the Virtual Reference group discussed making an icon to use on secondary pages and perhaps on the home page as well.
    • Linda will create mock-ups with new buttons (Ask a Librarian and Starting Points)
    • Paul suggested that some testing would we appropriate, perhaps using Systems Design Students.

  6. Staff Web text drop downs (Esther)
    • Esther reported that the text drop down version is ready to go and will go live tomorrow. She will send out a message to notify staff of the change and also will email web maintainers group about location of images directory.
    • Linda will validate for standards compliance.

  7. Accessibility Guidelines (Linda, Ester, Marina) - (See handout)
    • Group reviewed Web Accessibility checklist compiled by Linda.
    • It was suggested that web maintenance group be advised about checklist.
    • Linda will add code on top page to skip navbar.

  8. Jaws demos (Marina)
    • Janet Wason will be scheduling a demo for the Web Maintenance Group if Jaws can be installed in the flex lab. She will be checking with Carl to see if this is a possibility. If not she may schedule a few smaller groups to come to the Accessibility centre for a simple demo of a good site and a bad site.

  9. Book on Google (Chris, Marina)
    • Chris recommended that the group purchase a copy of the book on Google to review.

  10. Responses to the memo on HTML standard and target browsers (Marina)
    • Marina reported that there were two responses. One from a staff member who had problems testing the page she was responsible for. Marina helped to test the page with the WC3 validator and found errors.
    • Another response was from a manager who asked if Netscape should be
      upgraded. The question was referred to Systems.

  11. Compliance Issues
    • WebOps members agreed that they should clean up the code in the navigation bars so that all errors are gone.

  12. Priorities, projects and co-op student projects
    • Marina reported that she has created a page call Projects 2003 at http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/webops/
      projects2003.html. She hopes that this will be used as a springboard for each year. The group will wait until Charles is present to discuss project ideas.

  13. Next meeting - re-schedule or cancel
    • The committee decided to cancel the next meeting due to the Friends event featuring Chris Hadfield.

  14. Around the table
    • Esther reported that she went to the CSS meeting called by Jesse Rodgers. Most people at this meeting were there to learn about CSS and not to share their experiences.
