Web Standards
Agreed to support XHTML 1.0 instead of HTML 4.01 as previously decided since UWInfo is going with XHTML.
Clean up of pages for XHTML validation, doctype and character set declarations will be left for the Co-op student project.
Size of Site and Clean Up
It was agreed that the suggestions for clean up method that Charles made via email wouldn't help.
ACTION: Esther will draft a plan for a site clean up based on previous plans.
Accessibility Issues (Janet Wason guest)
Janet explained how the Library is responding to the new Ontario government requirements. She is co-ordinating this effort for the Library. She presented sheet of progress the Library has already made and of barriers that yet remain.
WebOps has already made efforts to make Web pages more usable for the visually impaired. Links with text "Click Here" are not useful for screen readers since "Here" needs a visual context.
It was decided to make clicking on a menu heading in the navbar would take the user to the corresponding section of the "text only" page, since these headings are links used to activate the drop down behavior of the navbar.
Page design needs to pay more attention to controlling tab order for people who can't use a mouse due to mobility impairment.
Janet mentioned an excellent Web site for information about all aspects of accessible Web design.
Filter for accessibility and content management
Bill proposed that if pages were generated from a ColdFusion template (instead of being static HTML pages) pages could be produced in alternate forms, for instance, in a screen reader friendly format, without sacraficing desirable visual features of pages.
This proposal may fit in with a proposal currently being drafted for presentation to DLCC to investigate applying content management to the entire Library Web site.
Around the Table
Linda - The TUG site menus should be redone to make them consistent with our new text-based approach. Linda will talk to Cheryl about doing this.
Bill - The new Journal Index interface is operational. The new eReference interface has been vetted with the TUG eReference group.
Esther - Esther has some concerns about the new design for the discipline pages. Linda will consult with Helen.
