It was noted that any training sessions for Dreamweaver 2004 will wait until it has been installed on all relevant machines.
A document prepared by Mike Wang, which compares the use of Dreamweavers MX 2004 and DMX Tidy's validation process, was discussed. Neither program is comprehensive.
It was noted that formatting should be rechecked after a Tidy fix because formatting may have been changed. A backup copy should be saved before the Tidy evaluation is performed.
It appears that a procedure starting with Dreamweaver validation and followed by Tidy should be performed. Validation at W3C then can ensure full compliance.
Mike has a tutorial for installing the Tidy extension into Dreamweaver and for performing validation. He will move the pages up to the Staff web area.
Charles briefly outlined some problems that have been encountered on pilot which runs the public workstations proxy as well as the Staff Web indexing using the Open Text Livelink software. An potential update of the OS on pilot may effect the operation of Livelink. Open Text Support recommends updating our version of Livelink and the Livelink spider if the new OS is installed. The Livelink software is overkill for the current use we make of it. It is time to look for alternative methods rather than going through the major process of updating Livelink with possible implications for Oracle underneath.
The requirements for staffweb indexing are:
Chris Gray has examined an open source solution, "swishe" (Simple Web site Indexing and Search for Humans - Enhanced) for which there is a very old xhier version. It uses perl cgi programs. This system does meet the above Library requirements. It also appears to be able to include databases in the indexing.
The best options appear to be either dropping the indexing of the Staff Web or implementing a "swishe" alternative.
Actions: Bill will check with LT3 about their indexing requirements which are currently also handled by Livelink. The sessions which Mike Wang will run for staff (Nov. 17th and 20th) relating to accessibility were discussed. Besides demonstrating Jaws and Bobby, Mike will also demonstrate Visual Check which emulates background/text contrast problems relating to accessibility.
Mike provided an update on his web site upgrading project.
The borrowers and development directories have been examined and a training session for Joe Szalai including the setting up of CCS for his pages. An accessibility evaluation was also performed on the Seagram's and tours directories.
A CMS session is booked for the FlexLab November 13 where Chris will give a demonstration of a CMS and the recommendation of the Content Management report will be discussed.
Marina Wan mentioned that Jack Cooper is holding a meeting about a potential university-wide license for surveys handling software and will miss the CMS session on Thursday.
