  1. Minutes of meeting, November 26, 2003
Minutes were approved with noted corrections.

  2. Busines Arising from the Minutes of November 26, 2003
2.5. Bill reported that Open Text link can't be shut down because the University would like to keep some presence of the Open Text software for future negotiation purposeswith the company.

2.8. The Content Management System proposal has been given to Library Administration and a decision about it should follow in early February.

    5. Marina will follow up with the action to consider wording for the Terms of Reference and the Content Management approach.

  3. Agenda Review
    Item 9 added - E-Journals Maintenance

  4. Use of CSS on the Library's website
Bill has been working with CSS and has found that style sheets can be used for layout. Chris added that the two most important reasons for using CSS are 1) Standards compliance with xhtml and 2) content & site management. Esther has noted a lot of problems with the style sheets that were created for the discipline pages. We need to take a closer look at these and proceed slowly. There is currently a problem with how we are connecting to Dreamweaver. David also noted that there are problems with the coding used for the Library guide series. A subgroup was organized to help developan approach to how global templates and style sheets will be implemented on web pages. The members of this subgroup will be Esther, David, Bill, Marina and Charles.
    ACTION:
Charles will create an area on the Library server for testing purposes.

  5. Secure FTP in Dreamweaver 2004 MX
Chris reported that secure FTP is built right into Dreamweaver 2004 MX. For the user, the program will look and work the same, but there are differences in how the sites are initially set up and defined, but this process is straightforward.

  6. XHTML Validation and W3C Accessibility buttons versus text
Members of the group noted that visible buttons seem to be secondary information that detracts a user's attention. It was acknowledged that a text statement would help maintainers with the validation of their pages.
    ACTION:
Esther will create a text statement.

  7. Dreamweaver 2001 MX - installation, configuration, training
Installation of this program is going well and according to schedule. David reviewed Mike's instruction and has revised and simplified these. David will be training and orienting new users to MX.

  8. Report from David
    (http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/~dismith/reports)
David will post his work on his personal page and also post any problems that he finds. He has been reading up on CSS and accessibility issues and also testing web pages in JAWS. He has noted formatting problems with the Library guides. Committee members thanked David for freeing up space in the html directory by converting 25 megabites of images into 1 megabite.
  9. E-Journals Maintennance
Bill reported that a single maintenance model is being worked on for the E-Journals database. The database has been designed in such a way that it can be applied to other library databases such as the E-Reference pages. This deveopment is moving us closer to a Content Management approach.

  10. Around the Table
Esther noted that the staff web navbars do not validate so she will work on these to correct this problem.
