- Report from the CSS task group
Esther listed the recommendations that will be going into the group's report.
Charles insisted that something be done to ensure that the proposed implementation of stylesheets with SSIs and Dreamweaver templates will be usable by all staff who create or maintain Web pages. When David has finished his documentation, Christy will try creating and editing pages on the test site and take notes on her experience with the new implementation. A few other people should also be asked to make similar tests before a final decision is made to go forward with converting the site to stylesheets.
Marina said that the CSS group will meet once more to approve their report.
- CSS and design issues' task group
The CSS group felt the need for another small focused group to look at the design issues raised by building stylesheets for the library site (for example, details of font for levels of headings on pages).
Marina suggested that further consideration of this be left until after the final report of the CSS group.
- WebOps task group
It was generally felt that the CSS group has been a great success and that WebOps should keep alert for future opportunities to tackle specific issues this way. It would also provide opportunity to bring others from outside WebOps into such discussions.
Chris suggested that something like a brown bag session might be a way to foster exchange among library staff working on and interested in the Web. Marina noted this for further discussion at a future meeting.
The meeting schedule for WebOps could be lightened by only calling meetings at the regularly scheduled times when accumulated agenda warrants.
- Directory/file names with spaces
The problem has been corrected in the discipline area and Marian Davies is going through the site for other instances that need amendment.
Charles will draft a message to go out to webmaint-l to remind people about proper file naming practices.
- Channel to report Library Web site problems
WebOps email will be placed at the bottom of the home page to provide a unified place for site problems to be reported. The email link will be protected against address harvesting and a standard subject line will be included in the link to help alert WebOps.
Marina will clear this proposal with the WebOps sponsors.
- Around the table
Marina - Marina and Esther have discussed the possible of a regular tip message to go to webmaint-l. She will make this an agenda item for a future meeting
Linda - There has been some experimentation with off-site Weblogging software on the site by Linda and David. Next meeting David will demo the software and WebOps will discuss the issues of using weblogs on the site.
Bill - The OCUL staff directory pages have incorporated protection from email address harvesting. Bill has recently had his awareness raised about having proper charset declarations in the headers of Web pages.
