- CSS Task Group Report
Esther reminded the group that the report was sent out earlier. It was suggested that the information about font size be removed.
Testing was done by 4 volunteers. People found the templates easy to work with, though some found SSI's difficult to use. These likely will be set up by someone who is familiar with SSI's. It was suggested that we point out that pages will often look a little odd in Dreamweaver and will have to be checked online in a browser.
After some discussion the committee approved the use of CSS on the Library web. Action: Esther will put together a a plan for implementation. Our recommendations will be submitted to Susan and Mark for approval.
- Tailoring Library Subject Guides – the next step?
Christy introduced a unique way of setting up research help from the University of Rochester library web site. She read from a report on a study conducted at Rochester. The report is at: http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/
portal_libraries_and_the_academy/v004/4.1reeb.html
The study looked at how and why students look for library material. They discovered that most students are looking for material specific to a course they are taking. As a result Rochester has set up pages which allow students to look up help according to course number or instructor. The address is at http://www.library.rochester.edu/index.cfm?page=courses .
- Blogs on Library
David demonstrated how a Blog works and some of its practical applications. He suggested that the library might want to look at installing a Blog program on our server instead of using an offsite Blogging service.
- Highlights from David
David reported that he has created a CSS navbar which looks exactly like the java script navbar presently used. He has shared this with Jesse Rodgers from Communication and Public Affairs.
He also has been working at house-keeping on library and assisting Linda with the Blogger and other technical problems.
