- Contribute: test reports, CMS requirements, site structure
Chris reviewed the requirements list from the final report of the CMS group and found that while Contribute meets all the requirements for creation and maintenance of Web pages it should not be considered a complete CMS solution.
Bill reported on the possibilities for access control for Web maintainers. There are three basic possibilities:
- Relying on the underlying permissions of the servers file system. The disadvantage is that maitainers are not told until they unsuccessfully try to save changes that they don't have permissions.
- Using Contribute's users and roles. The disadvantage is that each user can only be assigned one role, so we would be forced to define unique roles for each user that would require a great deal of administrative maintenance.
Giving site aliases to parts of the site. The disadvantage is that shared assets would have to be duplicated for each site alias.
The best solution seems to be to simplify the site structure as much as possible and to use solution 2 as parsimoniously as possible. The complications of our current UNIX based permissions were implemented in part to protect shared assets (such a templates) that are automatically protected by Contribute's template structure.
- PERMA project update
The draft specifications for new pages to give the public access to the three main sections (indexes, ereference, and ejournals) of the ERM database. The group is now giving consideration to adding an SFX Linker form to these pages and producing a combined search of the entire ERM database.
- Home page review project update
Anne Fullerton presented to the group the recommendation from the draft report on the previous redesign effort.
- Home Page with new UW template
New design principles are being proposed for UW Web sites and Mark is concerned to be sure the Library can live with the proposed changes. He has asked for a prototype as a proof of concept. Affan will work with Jesse Rodgers's templates to produce a protype.
- Architecture library Web site
Amy and Michelle have asked to avoid use of the library's top navbar on pages for the new site and to aim for a design closer to the new UW templates. They have been informed that in that case they can not count on WebOps to help maintain an alternate design.
- Home Page Quick TRELLIS Search
Chris discovered a simpler way to construct the TRELLIS quick search form that appears on the Library home page that does not use ColdFusion and so eliminates a possible point of failure. He did a mock up of the home page with the new version of the form and no other changes are needed. He will implement the new version and do the same for any other copies of the form on the Web site.
- Page Visit Counters
Christy knows of a free counter that is available for embedding in Web pages where the actual work is done by an external site. Affan also knows of another and he will make the details available.
- Around the Table
Esther -- reported on IST Web tech talk about convertion to templates and CSS
-- reported that the end of the conversion project is drawing near
-- older archival pages use old version of navbar. Since these are no longer part of the site navigation she will remove the navbar from archival pages.
