Minutes of the Meeting of January 12, 2005
1:30 - 3:00 pm, Porter Conference Room
Present: Christy Branston, Chris Gray, Linda Hastings, Esther Millar, Bill Oldfield, Marina Wan (Facilitator), Charles Woods (Recorder)
- Minutes of meeting Dec. 22, 2004
Approved with minor changes
-
Business Arising
None.
- Agenda review
The agenda was unchanged.
- Contribute
Bill encouraged the group to review the Contribute-Deployment-strategy WORD document previously distributed. The document will be reviewed by the group in the next WebOps meeting. It was proposed that the test/evaluation of Contribute commence on February 1 and be completed on February 15. It was noted that it was essential to prove that Contribute and Dreamweaver can work together on the library site for both casual maintainers and power-users. Full non-evaluation copies of Contribute will be installed on the PCs of Esther, Marina, Christy, Bill, Chris and and Linda.
- PERMA Update
Bill reviewed the latest version of the UW ERM interface crafted by the PERMA group as seen at:
http://train2.lib.uwaterloo.ca/ERM/newfinal/
databases.cfm
As noted in the previous minutes, the URL will distributed to staff shortly for review.
- Library Ereserves/UW-ACE
Bill reported on a brainstorming session conducted among members of IST and the Library on the possibility of using the UW-ACE to provide access and authentication to course-related Ereserves items. The session was attended by Laura Briggs, Bill Oldfield, Chris Gray, Charles Woods, Andrea Chappell and Lorne Connell. A project-charter is immenient.
- Part-Time Help
The group discussed the possibility of acquiring part-time student help to assist in various Library website activities, including further deployment of CSS and the application of the new UW Gold-standard. It was deemed premature to request assistance at this time but the group felt that the option should be kept open.
- Home Page Review
Since the last meeting, drafts have been sent to ISR and the library managers for review. Marina reviewed some of the changes with the group as seen at:
http://www.libtest.uwaterloo.ca/index_jan.html
Marina noted that there would be no usibility-studies upon the modicum of changes made to-date; these would come later when more substantial ones are applied as they are coordinated with the new PERMA pages described in item 5 above.
- TRELLIS Quick Search
The group agreed with Chris Gray's recommendation that the Cold-Fusion version of the library TRELLIS Quick Search page be reinstated as soon as possible. The canned-search approach introduced some unanticipated problems in WebVoyage.
- Library Support for FireFox/Mozilla
The group discussed the advantages and disadvantages of distributing FireFox as an alternative browser. It was agreed that the browser would be installed on several PCs of members of the UNIX webmaint group for evaluation. The issue will be further pursued at a Library Systems Department meeting.
- Around the Table
Esther reported some anomalies in the pages being created for Special Collection's Oral History Project (see http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/oral_history/
index.html). It was noted that site standards were not being applied with regards to CSS and SSI's. Marina will investigate the problem and contact Special Collections.
Charles asked if future Webops meetings could be booked via the campus Bookit system. Marina will investigate.
