Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of January 24, 2006
1:30 - 3:30 pm, DC 1568

Present: Chris Gray, Esther Millar (recorder), Marina Wan (facilitator), Charles Woods

Regrets: Christy Branston, Linda Hastings, Bill Oldfield

  1. Minutes of meeting January 10, 2006

    Accepted with one minor change.

  2. Business Arising

#6 Marina sent out the message to the webmaint-l mailing list. We should consider possible messages to send to illustrate the use of the list.

#7 At some point Chris will investigate further the size differences beween .png and .gif files.

#8 It turned out Eva already had access through Dreamweaver; Esther showed her the correct way to implement it through Fireworks/Dreamweaver.

  3. Agenda Review

    Add Firefox as #6.

  4. E-Resources Links

Chris had developed three different ways to create a Contribute-friendly URL. The third alternative was approved -- URL encoding :// as alternates.

    ACTION: Chris will update:
    - the form located at:
    <http://testtube.uwaterloo.ca/cpgray/makelink.cfm>
    - the Contribute FAQ page on Creating Links to ERM Resources
    -  the Contribute FAQ navigation to point to the form

    ACTION: Marina
will add a link to the form from the Connect from Home page.

  5. Staff Web Home Page content

WebOps reviewed the text prepared by LibWebReview. Concern was expressed that the new text still does not capture the wonders of the site.
ACTION: Marina will send the text to Susan Routliffe also suggesting that the manager's group may wish to add a line or two that  is "pithy, more visionary and more energetic."

  6. Firefox

Automatic updating of Firefox did not exist initially, but is available for newer versions of the browser. Is it time to give Firefox wider distribution throughout the Library? We discussed support issues (browser support for our pages, should not design for Firefox) and advantages (more tools available that aid in social bookmarking, faster response time than Netscape on public machines). Ultimately it is the Systems Group that needs to decide on installation and support.

ACTION: Chris will contact the Systems Group on where they stand on support for Firefox.

ACTION: Charles will expedite the installation of Firefox and its updates for: Rose Koebel, Marian Davies, Marina Wan, Dan Sich, Christy Branston, Esther Millar.

  7. Around the Table

    1. Endeavor
Charles expressed concern over Endeavor's future directions.

    2. E-Reserves Project
Seneca College recently conducted a study of e-reserves projects in Canada and the E-Reserves project implemented by Chris Gray, Alex McCulloch, et. al. last summer received high marks. In their final report Seneca College referred to the UW Library's project as the closest thing to a "benchmark" application.

    3. Statistics
ACTION: Charles will provide Marina with statistics (for September - December 2005) on the use of: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/sfx/sfx_form.html

    4. LibWebReview Subgroup
A subgroup of LibWebReview (Marina Wan, Helena Calogeridis, and Esther Millar) are reviewing comments from the "Communicating on the Web" presentation and from the Home Page Survey results. LibWebReview will be making minor changes to the Library's web site based on discussions raised by the subgroup.
