  1. Minutes of meeting February 21, 2006

    Accepted with minor changes.
  2. Business Arising

#2 - 4.2. The page regarding the creation of "Contribute friendly URLs" will be made active after review by the LibWebReview group. A link to it will be established under the heading 'Resources for Research'. ACTION (Marina): Review with LibWebReview and establish links.

#2 - 7c. The statistics for the use of the sfx form have been run. The decision to remove or not the "GetIt @ Waterloo" link from the Research database and Ejournals web pages will be deferred until the end of term. ACTION (WebOps/LibWebReview): Make decision end of term.

Charles notes that the FastStats program has an option to remove crawler entries from the report and this has been used in the SFX report.  The possibility of also removing CSS and image requests exists. ACTION (Charles): Will research the possibilities.

#6. The Tutorial Template has been finalized and ISR notified of its availability.

#7. Chris has more presentations in the works and is willing to present some brown bag sessions. Charles will look into making arrangements for the brown bag sessions. ACTION (Charles): Prepare brown bag session schedule.

Gregg Sennema of Laurier has arranged a talk on Web 2.0 for Laurier staff.  Charles and Christy will be attending. ACTION (Charles and Christy): Report on session.

#9. Some of the ideas from OLA need more exploration particularly those that use new technologies to integrate and carry information between disparate systems. No hit responses, for example on web searches as well as TRELLIS searches, should do more than report. They can present options with the data incorporated into the responses. This should be a future WebOps agenda item. ACTION (WebOps): Put Integration Strategies on the next WebOps agenda.

  3. Agenda review

    5. Ranking Databases (Christy)
    6. Templates (Esther)
  4. Ranking Databases

Christy showed a strategy used at WLU where subject listings of databases start with a short list of the most recommended databases followed by the remaining databases listed under that subject in alphabetic order. This simple strategy seems to meet a number of needs.  Bill will look into the setup of a similar ranking system at Waterloo. ACTION (Bill): Setup a prototype for evaluation which can be presented to selectors.
  5. Templates

Esther has received a number of request for additional templates. We would like to avoid the proliferation of templates because the more templates the more reduced is the flexibility of our site and the more difficulty is the maintenance effort.

The elimination of the left side navigation defeats the idea of consistency throughout the site and easy site navigation.  If increased real estate is the impetus for a request the right hand navigation can be dropped. But if right hand navigation is still important they could place it in table of contents on the top of each page.  A strategy to deal with these requests should be to see if we can help them meet their needs without creating new templates.
  6. Around the table

A Gregg Sennema email noted some new capabilities available to OCLC's WorldCat participants.  Since all of the TUG holdings have recently been updated in the OCLC database participation in some of these innovative capabilities now becomes possible.  Waterloo currently does not subscribe to WorldCat. This information will be passed on to Susan Routliffe and ISR. ACTION (Charles): Will prepare and send an email.

Chris will circulate a wikipedia article to WebOps members. The wikipedia software has an RRS feed capability.

An SFX Knowledge base update project is underway.

A coop student is being hired to do the preliminary work for setting up DSpace for our etheses and a possible future Institutional Repository.
  7. Next Meeting

The next and subsequent WebOps meetings will return to the regular Wednesday meeting schedule. Marina will setup Boo kIt.
