Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of Sept 6, 2006
1:00 - 2:30 pm, DC 1568

Present: Chris Gray (recorder), Esther Millar, Bill Oldfield, Dan Sich, Marina Wan (facilitator)

Regrets: Charles Woods

  1. Minutes of joint meeting with LibWebReview June 28, 2006

    Accepted with minor changes.

  2. Business Arising

#8 - UWSpace will go live 16 Oct.  AHS is exploring possible use of DSpace.  The German Department is also interested in using it.  Bill suggested the Library needs a committee established to manage DSpace as a service offered by the Library to the UW community.

#11 - WebOps meeting schedule updated in Bookit.

#4 - Dan's permissions have been established for editing access to the Web site.

ACTION: Esther will make changes to Christy's permissions in Contribute so that she can help maintain the Web site.

ACTION: Esther will check on what effect editing in Dreamweaver has on file permissions on the Library Web site.

#9 - Workstations group is planning to put Firefox in next image for staff. They plan to deploy it to public workstations once an intallation problem is fixed for IBM workstations.

#10 - Testing of blog software is beginning now that summer is over.  Three copies of Viewlet Builder will be made available on Library laptops.

  3. Agenda review

Add #8. Waterloo-Wellington-Dufferin Health Library Network
Moved from #8 to #9. Around the table

  4. Membership

Marian Davies has agreed to join WebOps to offer graphics support and Susan Routliffe has approved her addition.

ACTION: Marina will draft an email announcement and vet it with WebOps members.

  5. Archiving for Fall 2006

Its archiving time again.  Bill raised the question of whether it is possible to archive the Web site on disk in a way that would allow it to be easily viewable.  There are possible size implications (use DVD maybe?) that require use of a zip file and problems with absolute URLs.  A Web 'copier' program (like WinHTTrack) might suffice if size and time aren't a factor and unnecessary file (such as Contribute back up files) can be factored out.

ACTION:  Chris will ask Charles to do the annual back up.

  6. Strategies and Priorities

Some time was spent brainstorming a list of possible areas for further investigation and development:
    • location maps
    • browser support
    • blog software
    • event calendars and microformats
    • library application integration
    • RSS feeds
    • wiki
    • quick polls
    • branded search bar/browser extensions
    • techical review of Web site (CLF templates and off-site copies, CSS/SSI clean up, fixed page width vs. fluid design)
    • metasearch
    • Google analytics

  7. Update from LibWebReview

Marina reported on recent activities of the LibWebReview group.

  8. Waterloo-Wellington-Dufferin Health Library Network

Carol wants some help setting up the Web site.  It is unclear who should help and how much.

ACTION: Marina will talk to Carol.

  9. Around the table

Marina - EI Webcast on Firefox extensions this Friday, Sept. 8th, 1 - 2 pm, DC 1568.

Chris - Planning to do short practical sessions on various Web 2.0 software for staff to help them understand patron's concerns and questions.  The sessions will be brief and hands-on to give staff minimal abilities with del.icio.us, Bloglines, etc.  Chris will make an effort to co-ordinate with the series of viewlets Dan is producing covering similar material.
