- Library Blogs and Wikis - update
The server crashed and files were corrupted. Chris was unable to restore yesterday's snapshot, but will continue to work on recovering the data.
The wiki now has a new URL: http://wiki.lib.uwaterloo.ca/ . Chris was able to restore everything from the old database. Only administrators can create accounts and users cannot edit unless they have an account.
The group shared experiences and thoughts about wikis and blogs. We noted wiki strengths for project planning and collaborative work. Previous experience has shown that successful blogs were those that had an interested community, where the organization used blogs as the only means of communication (e.g., journal that did not accept letters to the editor), or had a champion for the site who solicited responses.
As we talked about the practical applications for a Wiki, it was suggested that the maintenance of the TRELLIS Help pages might be handled on a Wiki. ACTION: Charles will take this to the TUG OPAC group to outline problems, solutions, etc. to help determine if Wiki is the way to go.
Chris noted that he has installed WordPress and determined that it is easy to install multiple versions of blogs. Each blog would need it's own host name and each version could have its own CLF (through style sheets, templates, etc.).
- Google Analytics
Our pages now include the javascript for Google Analytics. (It has been added to the department.html ssi.) To begin we will first concentrate our efforts on articulating what we hope to glean from the stats and then research to see whether Google Analytics will be able to deliver them. ACTION: All - send statistical requirements to Bill. We should also ask LibWebReview what kind of stats would be helpful to them.
- Telnet and ftp on Library
We discussed removing telnet and ftp from library machines. To ensure they are no longer required, Charles will scan logs to determine if they are being used. We will continue discussion in 2 weeks. Chris will talk to Carl about the SSH Clients on public workstations.
- Name for UWDIR authentication from Pilot
We were asked if it is possible to change the UWDIR signon used for Lexis/Nexis authentication, etc, on Pilot. ACTION: Charles will implement the change to: AuthName "Quest/UWDIR."
- Issue of secure UWDIR authentication from Pilot
Can we do secure UWDIR authentication for particular pages and not have to make the pilot server an https one. We discussed the concern from IST about a message "Warning: This server is requesting that your username password is being sent in a insecure manner..." There is a concern we are passing UWDIR authentication unencrypted and that we should not be doing this. ACTION: Charles will talk to Reg Quinton about https in Pearl scripts.
- Meeting Time
Deferred.
- Around the Table
On February 15, ExLibris is coming to Guelph to show their Primo wares. Allan will forward the invitation.
