Notes from July ?, 2007
Present: Allan Bell, Chris Gray, Doug Mornton, Charles Woods
Regrets:
We had a very good discussion of where we are now and where we would like to be and identified some broad needs of what we need to do to get there.
We used the flip charts to brainstorm around the topics WHERE ARE WE NOW, WHERE WOULD WE LIKE TO GO, and HOW WE GET THERE FROM HERE.
WHERE WE ARE NOW
- The addition of the quick search was a success
- The site is a "patchwork" quilt, pages added over time
- Some issues to discuss
- Returning staff pages in a search - search is too broad for students/faculty
- Organizational and staffing
- Type your bar code repeatedly (Single sign on)
- Navigation is difficult (LibQual)
- Is our site useful to users?
- 6 clicks to current staff page
- 2-4 pages to find a dictionary through "research tools"
- Where are we? No breadcrumbs, no way to navigate to some pages; $ are an issue; Good ideas are not carried through
- OpenURLs in TRELLIS
- Assessment is not currently part of our culture
- Google analytics
- Use and traffic patterns
- Site structure/Information Architecture
- Pages that are not used / have no audience
- Everyone has strong and differing opinions about design; Windows of opportunity for changes are short (only make changes for the beginning of terms). Is the site tuned for discovery agents? Where do we fit into web directions on campus? How to leverage TUG Information Technology expertise
WHERE WOULD WE LIKE TO GO?
- USER and TASK focus
- Functional and easy to use
- 1 click or 0 click access
- What is the intended audience?
- Primary customers
- Faculty
- Undergraduate students
- Graduate students
- Secondary customers
- Recognition that we are dealing with a younger audience
- What is the mission/goal of the site?
- Device agnostic
- Personalization/customization
- tailor experience
- silent customization like amazon
- Integration for a tailored experience
- It is the place to go/be
- Integrate student services
- Aesthetics/graphic energy
- attractive/current/fresh
- visual excitement/interactivity
- Continuous feedback/assessment
- Appropriate services for the medium (no 50GB files)
- Beta site
- APIs
- Assessment
HOW DO WE GET THERE FROM HERE
- Google Analytics
- Design principles
- Design for usability
- Research for optimal screen reading
- Skill sets to develop
- css
- interface design/design for usability/ HCI
- Visual design
- Web Publishing
- Graphics expertise
- Appropriate staffing
