Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of July 14, 2010
2:00 - 3:30 pm, Porter 428

Present: Annie Bélanger (Chair), Allan Bell, Nancy Collins, Tim Ireland, Adrian Kemp, Doug Morton (Recorder), Charles Woods

Regrets: Marian Davies, Chris Gray, Esther Millar,

  1. Approval of WebOps Minutes of June 9 – Approved as distributed

  2. Business Arising
    5. Location of Resource Notes. Doug has identified most of the pages still active and where they are called from. A recently generated list from Trellis is longer than expected.

    6. bX Recommender Service. Emails have been sent out, Nancy wrote an article in NewsAtLib. Doug still has to put a note on the SFX page reminding users to look further down. It was also suggested that Doug check with librarians and OCUL-SFX people to see how the trial is going.

    7. Visual Design of Left-Hand Menu. Chris is away - deferred to a future meeting.

    8. Redesign - Information Architecture of Library Web Site. Chris & Marian are away - deferred to a future meeting.

  3. Agenda Review
Add item: Survey Tools - Nancy

  4. Survey Tools
Nancy presented a request from LINC to subscribe to an online survey tool. It was noted that the on-campus survey tool is not easy to use. A comparison chart assembled by Rebecca Hutchinson was distributed and discussed. Canadian hosting is preferred but not required unless personal data is stored. Library Systems Dept. should be consulted to be sure there is space to store and manipulate the data as well as format compatibility with local software (such as Cognos).
ACTION: Nancy LINC, other committees and individuals interested in online surveys should get together, generate a brief proposal, including a shortlist of preferred tools, for Allan.

  5. Shibboleth on Campus
Doug reported that he was able to replicate the problem encountered earlier in July which lead a prof to a uWaterloo Shibboleth authentication page; the steps will be distributed by email for those who wish to see for themselves (it has to be done off-campus). It is our understanding that no authentication is actually taking place as there are no links to the library servers. As more servers implement Shibboleth such incidents are expected to become more frequent.
ACTION: Allan will ask some IST people about the status and plans for local implementation of Shibboleth.

  6. Special Collections: Doors Open
As part of Doors Open, Special Collections would like to put a photo gallery on the web. While services like Picasa and Flickr could be used there is already software on the Library server which should allow images and metadata to be loaded easily.
Action: Adrian will confirm the capabilities of the software. Allan will discuss the project with Susan Mavor and Anita Streicher.

  7. Around the Table
Charles - Primo3 is now on a staging server for configuration and testing; the current plan is to launch it for the Fall term.
Annie - Work is beginning on the uWaterloo website redesign and information architecture of the site.

  8. Next Meeting
Next Meeting: July 28, Davis 1568, 2:00-3:30 pm. Recorder: Charles.
