UW Archiving Initiative
Chris Halonen provided an overview of the uWaterloo Archiving Initiative. Archive-It allows for 300 seed urls, 1 terabyte of storage / year, and 12 million documents. We currently have 175 seed urls, are using nowhere near 1 terabyte of storage / year, and are at about 20% of our document limit. Chris described what information and pages he is generally capturing and not. Library content not currently being captured includes UMD files, Special Collections’ finding aids, the Library catalogue, and materials inaccessible to the crawler.
- ArXiv
Pascal reported on a conference he attended on the sustainability of the ArXiv project. Under consideration are pricing schemes for downloaders and requests for $700,000 to $800,000 contributions.
They currently have a few large contributors. The emphasis of the collection at first is on high-energy physics with plans to gradually increase the scope.
- Decommissioning UWLibWiki
Chris reviewed the evidence he collected from server logs and from questioning concerned staff that UWLibWiki is no longer used and all content of value has been migrated elsewhere. It was agreed that the server could be decommissioned.
There was also some discussion of how to manage the life cycle of various web application maintained by the library.

Action : Annie will explore what should be done about web publication of non-HTML documents, such as Word and PDF documents.
- Library Review
Pascal reported on the start of the
working group phase of the self-study. None of the working groups has a specifically technology focussed mandate. Nancy mentioned some of the concerns related to student success: communication, social media, and jargon. Chris urged that the needs of graduate students and faculty should not be forgotten. Pascal noted the increasing emphasis on undergraduate research. There was a discussion of portfolios in Learn, the new D2L-based learning management system. Pacal noted that LEO, the group managing Learn, is having a retreat on Feb 29 and an important concern of the group is partnering with the Library to bring digital content into Learn.
- Drupal
[My notes on this discussion are cryptic to me now. I produce them verbatim and perhaps the group could try to reconstruct. Good Luck.]
